For several years, the TU Mad River Chapter has conducted or sponsored litter clean-ups on Mad River. In recent years the volume of litter, plus the “OPEN DUMPING” of larger household items has increased, especially at certain bridges. We are planning to schedule additional formal clean-ups, but in order to lessen the volume of waste collected at these events, we are asking for volunteers to pick up litter and keep an eye on potential issues, when visiting or fishing the river. Keeping the river clean makes your fishing experience and those of others more enjoyable. It also helps reduce further littering and dumping. Open dumping and littering attracts more littering and open dumping. The volunteer names, along with their preferred bridge area will be identified on this web site.
Here are the items volunteers can help with:
Ongoing Litter Issues
Litter along the Mad River and open dumping are ongoing issues that need continuous attention. If you are out on the river, please look around for any trash that can be picked up and disposed of properly.
As discussed at the annual meeting, carrying an empty onion bag or mesh bag for trash collection while on the water is a good idea. This is especially important around the US-36 bridge area, where local landowners are frustrated with the litter and open dumping. They are considering revoking access to the river, so please be mindful and help keep the area clean. If you collect trash that you are uncomfortable taking with you, please contact me for options.
Open Dumping
If you encounter large-scale open dumping, including dumping of large items, please contact the county wildlife officer.
