In conjunction with our Columbus and Central Ohio Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing program, I am coordinating a fish outing event with Big Walnut Middle School in Sunbury, Ohio (Big Walnut Middle School 555 S Old 3C Road, Sunbury, OH 43074). The date of this event is Friday, May 12, 2023. In past years we have conducted a fly-fishing activity as part of the student body’s Annual Community Service Day. All Big Walnut Middle School students participate in an activity that benefits the public. Some will visit nursing homes, some clean up parks, edge planting beds and apply mulch, while others assist teachers in the elementary schools and libraries discarding worn out books, cleaning, as well as other service venues during the morning hours.
The fly-fishing event as part of the service day activities has been a popular venue with the students who not only learn to fly fish, but they are able to interact with our participating Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing veterans. We have guides signed up, but I am looking to fill another 6 spots. We will be fishing at the Sunbury Reservoirs located about 5-6 minutes from the school. Whereas most volunteers and veterans will meet first at the school for coffee, juice, donuts rolls, etc. participants can also elect to go straight to the reservoirs. Actual fishing time will be from 9:15- 12 noon. Students and veteran participants will be provided a brief 15-minute casting clinic before being paired with our PHWFF volunteer guides. Note that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will be stocking the reservoir #1 with rainbow trout, one week prior to our Friday, May 12 event for some added catching opportunities in addition to the already present bass, blue gill and crappie populations that claim the reservoirs as their own.
Afterwards the students will return to the school. Participating volunteer guides and veterans can opt to return to the school for a box lunch in the cafeteria.
Please let me know if you are available, interested and can commit to being included as a guide for this event. There is no cost to participate. We will have all the fishing gear we need on hand.
As a side note, you can have a great impact on this coming generation of youngsters who have studied our many military wars and conflicts at some level in school, but have not had the opportunity to meet and interact with real, local veterans. Remember, please respond ASAP, and let me know if you want to be included for this event. It truly is a lot of fun! More Info: Page 1 Page 2 Thanks all!
